The Roman Empire

LIFE IN THE CITY When we think of rome, or any roman city, we usually

think of grand pubilc buildings and statues anb large

ceremoni arches. we assume thar most romans lived in luxury

in beautiful villas and other large houses, with slaves to look

after them and wonderful food to eat. The reality, however,

was quite different, for alongside this grand vison was the

real city, one of noise and dirt and slums. Most romans lived

squashed together in squalid, overcrowded aqartment blocks.

(Taken from 'Life in Ancient Rome' by Simon Adams).

I have written about Ancient Rome because it really interests me - they live in Italy (which I would love to visit) and because they were so clever with buildings (they used lava from a volcano in their buildings and they built the Colosseum).
